Submandibular gland surgery

What is the submandibular gland?

These are the second largest salivary glands in the body after the parotid glands. They are based just below the jawline on each side of your neck.

What you may be referred for:

  • Benign tumors - pleomorphic adenoma

  • Submandibular duct stones - that can not through the mouth

  • Malignant cancers - mucoepidermoid cancers, adenoid cystic cancers and adenocarcinomas

What to expect

Surgery is carried out over 1-2 hours, longer if your condition requires a neck dissection. This is carried out while you are under a general anaesthetic. You will be able to drink, eat within a few hours after the surgery. You will be monitored closely during your hospital stay. Patient are typically discharged home after 1-2 days. Most patients feel well recovered after 1-2 weeks.
