Neck lumps

Lumps in the neck are common and will often resolve spontaneously.  In some cases however it is the first presentation of a serious condition that requires comprehensive assessment to determine the cause and best treatment.

What are the causes?

There are many causes of benign neck masses.  These may need to be removed surgically if the affect nerves or exert pressure on neighbouring organs in the head and neck. Examples include branchial cysts, lipomas, goitres, vascular lymphatic masses, pharyngeal pouch or swanomas (overgrowth of nerve cells).

The majority of neck lumps are due to inflamed lymph nodes after an infection in the head and neck region.
